  • The Beastcoast 2/4 – Flatbush Zombies

Three pieces to the puzzle: Demetri Simms, better known as Meechy Darko; Antonio Lewis, better known as Zombie Juice; and Erick Arc Elliott, known as just that. All were born in Flatbush, a place where, ever since the ’80s, primarily immigrant families from the Caribbean have settled. No different for these guys. Meechy and Erick’s…

  • October awareness

Every month of every year has a ‘theme’ of sorts. Though we are coming out of World Suicide Prevention Month in September, that doesn’t mean we now forget about suicide. Keep checking on your friends and stay mindful of the signs. In October the world turns pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month! The pink ribbons…

  • Dakou 打口

Let me take you back to the streets of China in the 1990s, because something unusual started circulating there. Young people in Beijing, Shanghai, and other cities began buying strange-looking CDs and cassette tapes. These were not ordinary records. They were deliberately cut, saw-marked, or drilled at the edges. Western music companies had shipped surplus…

  • The Beastcoast 1/4 – The Underachievers

Akeem Joseph, better known as AK The Savior, was born on June 13, 1991, in Flatbush, Brooklyn. A year earlier, Marlon Fung, better known as Issa Gold, was born on July 26, 1990, just a few blocks away from AK. Ever since the ’80s, Flatbush has primarily been a place where immigrant families from the…

  • September 10

Every year on September 10, we stand still and the world pauses for something that happens every day in silence: World Suicide Prevention Day. Established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention together with the World Health Organization, it is not only a day to mourn. It is a day to give our…

  • Two Phone Baby Keem

Hykeem Jamal Carter Jr. was born on October 22, 2000. He spent most of his early years between Long Beach and Las Vegas, and he mainly credits Las Vegas with shaping him. Hykeem’s mother was very young when she had him and struggled a lot with substance abuse. His father was mostly not in the…

About Ferulifolia

Ferulifolia started out as a school project. The Culture, a hardcover book on the full history of hip-hop and the culture around it, was the very first project released. This was followed by a monthly magazine line on subjects around hip-hop culture. Magazines about, for example, Griselda, Rick Rubin, Takashi Murakami, and the love around anonymous Instagram mood board accounts.

After the magazine writing and publishing came to a stop, I started keeping social media for artists at an artist residence, interviewing them and turning the interviews into short stories for the followers of both the artists and the residence. I helped the artists settle into the location and was their main point of contact. At the end of the residency the artists had an exhibition and moved on to their next project. I was involved with artists the likes of Temao Lee, Rita Leitão, Seirin Hyung, and Ankush Safaya, to name a few.

After a break of a little over a year with Ferulifolia, in 2026 I decided to continue Ferulifolia as a blog-type passion project. Wanting to get back into writing and journalism, Ferulifolia will be a creative outlet where I write about cultural interests and take the liberty to interview and write about more local interests and artists as well. I might once in a while still release a physical magazine with a certain blog post, but definitely not for every story.
