  • Jean-Michel Basquiat

Born in Brooklyn on December 22, 1960, to a Haitian father, and a Puerto Rican mother, Basquiat grew up in a household where French, Spanish, and English overlapped easily. His mother, a massive fan of art, took him to the great museums of New York and signed him up as a junior member of the…

  • Lianne La Havas

Near the end of February 2020, my view on music forever changed. COLORS Studios uploaded Bittersweet by Lianne La Havas — a now over 13-million-times-watched edition of this intimate show where I loved discovering new artists. A woman who, in the last 6+ years, has risen to become one of my most listened-to artists of…

  • The Rise of Anonymous Moodboards

These days the pages I’m talking about still go by a few different names. You’ve got anonymous moodboards, creative moodboards, unknown influencers—but the most common label is still “archive pages.” Before we go further, let’s clear a couple of things up. What even is a moodboard, or an archive for that matter? A moodboard is…

  • NIGO

Tomoaki Nagao was never meant to stay in one lane. Born in 1970 in Maebashi, a quiet city in Gunma Prefecture, he grew up with a nurse for a mother and a metal fabricator for a father. While other kids played outside, he collected toys, records, and magazines. American hip-hop hit him early. By sixteen…

About Ferulifolia

Ferulifolia started out as a school project. The Culture, a hardcover book on the full history of hip-hop and the culture around it, was the very first project released. This was followed by a monthly magazine line on subjects around hip-hop culture. Magazines about, for example, Griselda, Rick Rubin, Takashi Murakami, and the love around anonymous Instagram mood board accounts.

After the magazine writing and publishing came to a stop, I started keeping social media for artists at an artist residence, interviewing them and turning the interviews into short stories for the followers of both the artists and the residence. I helped the artists settle into the location and was their main point of contact. At the end of the residency the artists had an exhibition and moved on to their next project. I was involved with artists the likes of Temao Lee, Rita Leitão, Seirin Hyung, and Ankush Safaya, to name a few.

After a break of a little over a year with Ferulifolia, in 2026 I decided to continue Ferulifolia as a blog-type passion project. Wanting to get back into writing and journalism, Ferulifolia will be a creative outlet where I write about cultural interests and take the liberty to interview and write about more local interests and artists as well. I might once in a while still release a physical magazine with a certain blog post, but definitely not for every story.
